Here is a study in contrasts: Shiv Singh begs on the streets of Jaipur during the day. But every afternoon when the local university is in session, he heads over to attend class.
Singh, who is 48-years-old, is a law student at Rajasthan University.
According to college administration, he has not taken a single day of leave since classes began — he even comes to college when there is no class to study in the library.
Singh has a degree from Government College in Gangapur City, but the degree didn't result in a job. He started work as a labourer, but wasn't able to continue. His wife and children left him, and, with no other source of income, he started to beg.
He joined Rajasthan University when he saw an advertisement for the law college in a newspaper.
He bought the books he needed with the money he'd saved from begging.
His fellow students say that he is one of the most hardworking people in class.
Singh hopes to get a job at court once he has a law degree.
